French Onion Dip

This is a great low calorie option when you want a yummy dip for veggies or chips.  It would be delicious with baked potato chips or carrot sticks!  The secret is reduced fat cream cheese and plain Greek yogurt.  I have taken to subbing plain Greek yogurt anytime a recipe calls for sour cream and the calorie difference is amazing and the flavor does not change at all!  Enjoy this yummy and waistline friendly dip!

French Onion Dip (adapted from iowagirleats.com)

1 T. extra virgin olive oil
1 T. unsalted butter
2 large yellow sweet onion (such as Vidalia), chopped
1 t. salt
1/2 t. black pepper
1/2 c. reduced sodium beef broth
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 t. sugar
1/4 t. dried thyme
1/4 t. garlic powder
12 oz. plain Greek yogurt
8 oz. 1/3 less fat cream cheese at room temperature

Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Add onions, salt, pepper, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, garlic powder and sugar and stir well.  Turn heat to high and bring broth to a boil, then turn the heat back down to medium low and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are very soft and dark brown, about 35-40 minutes.  If onions begin to burn, turn heat down to low.  Remove onions to a plate or bowl then cool completely.

In a large bowl, blend together (with a hand mixer) the yogurt and cream cheese until smooth.  Stir in the cooled onion mixture and spoon into a serving dish.
